The Standard was developed in cooperation with the two BMBF and BMUB funded projects "AgoraNatura - Market place for more nature" and "Valorisation of climate and nature conservation measures in Germany's National Natural Landscapes (NNL)". The Standard was developed iteratively in coordination with the concrete pilot projects in both projects. In the same way, this standard is also being further developed in connection with the pilot projects.

The development of the criteria for the Naturplus-Standard was based on existing standards for voluntary carbon markets (e.g. VCS, GoldStandard, MoorFutures) as well as on general guidelines of the International Organisation for Standardisation.
